Bucharest Early Intervention Project

Research Objective

Over the years, Dr. Sheridan has collaborated on efforts in the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP), a study examining behavioral development and the impact of early experience on the brain. BEIP is a randomized control trial of foster care as an intervention for children abandoned at or around the time of birth and placed in one of six institutions for young children in Bucharest, Romania (Zeanah, et al., 2003). In this sample, Dr. Sheridan is involved in assessing a variety of measures and examining the neural mechanisms linking early adversity to mental disorders. The principal investigators of the BEIP are Charles Nelson, Nathan Fox, and Charles Zeanah.
